I was just out in the back yard cleaning up after the German Shepherd, the Greyhound, and the Mutt, so naturally my thoughts turned to the quality of the Republican debate in this 2012 campaign season. I am sorry to serve up two-day old bread, but I can't let this go.
I basked in Chris Matthew's take-down of Reince Preibus like everyone else. I was happy to see Mr Matthews refuse to back off. And I was especially happy to see him ask Mr Priebus just what was funny about the 'joke'. But as brutal as that take-down was it was not brutal enough.
"Everybody got the joke", said Mr Priebus. But remember, Mitt Romney himself said the comment had nothing to do with Barak Obama. It was all about Michigan he said. But the crowd did not cheer for their Favorite Son. They laughed.
"Everybody got the joke". What joke did they get? Mitt Romney did not claim that no one had asked to see his rubber chicken. Rubber chickens are funny. See one and you laugh. Birth certificates are not. See one and you don't.
"Everybody got the joke" When everyone gets the joke that is not supposed to be there ... don't we call that a "dog whistle" in political jargon?
"That's just a dog whistle", is what Mr Priebus said Monday morning. Good thing for America he was too slow afoot to realize it at the time. He got his job for bringing Wisconsin Scott Walker. That didn't rile up the Democrats any, did it? And the Human Vowelcluster of Blowback keeps on blowing.
Well, I must get back to rehearsing for the GOP convention.
